OverviewVenous disease is a condition in which the veins have problems sending blood from the legs back to the heart. Chronic venous disease is a long-term condition and occurs because a vein is partly blocked, or blood is leaking around the valves of the veins (MedlinePlus). Venous disorders are very common and whilst not usually life threatening, can cause pain and disability. This practical guide provides an understanding of the pathophysiology of venous diseases and their management. Beginning with an introduction to anatomy and physiology, the following chapters exam clinical manifestations, staging, and management options including laser therapy, surgery and sclerotherapy (injection of a substance directly into the vein). The final sections discuss more complex disorders such as deep vein thrombosis, chronic venous ulcer and morbid varicose vein. The final chapter provides a photographic presentation of venous diseases to enhance understanding of the text.
