OverviewThis book tells the story of my parents' lives from 1900-1984: how they grew up during the First World War and how they coped with the hardships of that time. Russell, my father, married one of Arthur Lewin's daughters, Jane Elizabeth, who was part of the famous 'Rock King' business of Peterborough. Together they built up his poultry farm business. Moving to Farcet in 1933, they named the farm 'Throstlenest Hatcheries Ltd'. With no water laid on in the village, life was not easy for them in their new house in those early years. The story then moves on a few years to the Second World War period when the shortage of meat and rationing meant people were forced to help themselves. During this period Russell's businesses had grown and his livestock was in great demand. Even after the war, food was in short supply and rationing did not finish until 1954. My sister and I were born before the war. Technology has moved on rapidly since our childhood; we had no televisions, vacuum cleaners, freezers, mobiles phones or laptops. This book will tell you what we did have and how we managed to live our lives and have fun, despite the lack of modern comforts which so many people enjoy today. This story is all part of the everyday history of ordinary people after the war years and the book also recounts the wider events taking place in our country at the time. The events of the book are also highlighted by personal photographs throughout.
