A Tiger Named Spot

Overview

A Tiger Named Spot was born different than the other tigers. This cub had spots instead of stripes! As he grew, he questioned his parents about his appearance. He asked why he was different. He asked why other tigers have stripes. And most of all, he wondered if he was the only one who was different. His parents answer most of his questions. But the last one gets answered at the end when Spot is invited to a s'mores party. This beautifully illustrated rhyming tale is engaging for small children because it's both colorful and comical. But on a deeper level, it's about appreciating differences in ourselves and others. There is more than one way to reach a goal. Sometimes what at first seems to be a weakness is a strength. It's just in camouflage.

Reviews

Reviewed by: Philip Van Heusen Review Rating: 5 Stars - Congratulations on your 5-star review Reviewed by Philip Van Heusen for Readers' Favorite Inga Buccella tells the story of Spot--a tiger with spots instead of stripes--in A Tiger Named Spot. As Spot grew up, he had questions in his mind. Finally, he was ready to ask his parents two major questions: 1) Why do I have spots when other tigers have stripes, and 2) Is there anyone else like me? His parents lovingly explained that stripes help tigers camouflage themselves in the wild, but they did not know why Spot had spots instead of stripes. They took Spot out one day to see how the stripes protected and helped tigers. Spot wisely used his spots to help him camouflage himself. They were very proud of him. Later, he was invited to a party with some zebras. There, he met a female zebra named Dot. Instead of most zebras' normal stripes, Dot had spots just like Spot. He learned he was not alone. Our differences make us special, and there is always someone like us. Does your child feel different from other children? Many children have differences that can be seen, while some have differences that are invisible but still affect them. In A Tiger Named Spot, Inga Buccella tackles the issue of differences and society. In easy-to-understand language, Inga helps children see that even if they have some differences, they can still succeed. Spot did not have stripes, but he used his spots like other tigers used their stripes. Be sure to take the time to discuss any differences your child may have and how they can use those differences to their advantage. Different is not a negative quality. Learning that differences are normal can help your child feel more self-confident and enjoy being around others.

Author Information

Inga Buccella is an author and illustrator of many Children's books, a novel, and a book of poetry. She is inspired by both nature and history. For over ten years, she has created custom pet renderings for her Etsy shop clients. Cats, dogs, ferrets, lizards, and even a pet pig have been subjects for her almost one thousand renderings. Inspired by historic Cape May, New Jersey, Inga wrote a novel featuring dual timelines entitled In the Age of Buoyancy. That story led to her writing a children's book set in colonial times for the Greater Cape May Historical Society. Waves of Independence, celebrates America's 250th year of independence. A Coloring book with the same title is now available. The storybook will be released in 2026. Her most recent picture books, Pignoli the Pig, No One Like Ewe, and A Tiger Named Spot, were all imagined stories created with three special little ones in mind. When not writing her own stories, Inga Buccella is reading books, and also writing book reviews for Reader's Favorite, or creating art with her grandchildren.
