A Therapist’s Guide to the Multidisciplinary Treatment of Eating Disorders

Overview

The book provides an orientation to the diagnoses of eating disorders along with current information about evidence-based practices for multidisciplinary treatment. Unlike other books on eating disorders, this book conceptualizes eating disorder treatment as a team effort, focusing on the psychotherapist and their role as a member within a comprehensive treatment team. Keane and Mendes identify the primary components of an eating disorderspecialized multidisciplinary “treatment team”: a therapist to provide ongoing psychotherapy and care coordination, a medical provider to oversee medical complications and general medical stability, and a registered dietitian to provide nutrition counseling and manage nutritional status. It is increasingly common that adjunctive disciplines are also involved in the treatment team, such as integrative therapists, couple’s counselors, school counselors, and other therapeutic support. Through the experiences of seasoned eating disorder experts, readers will learn the basic tenets of eating disorder treatment, diagnostic differences between disorders, effective treatments, case examples, and sage clinical advice. Chapters are written from the perspective of a psychotherapist, as well as from that of a registered dietitian and a medical physician. Designed to prepare both experienced and novice psychotherapists, as well as master’s and doctoral students, for providing eating disorder treatment, this easy-to-read book is a must for any psychotherapist considering work with eating disorders.

Reviews

""With over 30 years of experience in the treatment of eating disorders, I find this therapist guide to be a long-overdue and invaluable contribution to the field. Bob Keane and Kam Mendes have created a resource that bridges the critical gap between clinical curiosity and practical competence, offering therapists a clear, compassionate, and evidence-informed roadmap for engaging with this complex population. Their emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and foundational knowledge aligns with the integrative principles I’ve long advocated. This book is not just a guide, but an invitation to join a movement of thoughtful, well-equipped clinicians ready to meet the urgent needs of those struggling with eating disorders."" James Greenblatt, MD, founder and CEO of Psychiatry Redefined, author of several books including Answers to Anorexia, and Finally Hopeful: The Personalized, Whole Body Plan to Find and Fix the Root Causes or Your Depression ""This book is a tremendous gift to anyone entering or already established in the field of eating disorders treatment, no matter the discipline. Written by highly experienced providers using well-informed yet humble and compassionate voices, each chapter offers case vignettes to illustrate the nuances of complex interdisciplinary eating disorders care. You will be able to immediately apply this information to your practice, given digestible soundbites, articulate action plans, and the empowerment packed into each chapter. Written in a conversational tone, you can feel the mentorship coming through the pages, making this an efficient and effective training resource for any clinician."" Paula A. Quatromoni, DSc, MS, RDN, associate professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology, Boston University ""We finally have a book that breaks down gate keeping in the eating disorder community. This book warmly welcomes the therapists we need in the field and equips them with the knowledge and skills to move beyond individual silos and collaborate with other disciplines. It is a priceless collaboration reflecting decades of experience available in one bite sized package. I wish this book was available far sooner for clinicians and supervisors alike!""
