A Teen's Guide to Critical Thinking: Protect Yourself from Phone and Social Media Addiction

Overview

This book is written for an audience of teens, aged from thirteen to nineteen by definition, however its contents may very well be addressed to a wider audience including older people, specifically parents. The idea behind this book is to raise awareness over how a massive amount of information, through the internet, social media, the school system, the news, the groups one belongs to, isn't in most cases generated with the intent of helping individuals to think freely. Quite the opposite, in most cases its nature is manipulative and needs to be seriously addressed in order to save the freedom and dignity of each individual. This book is structured as a dialogue between a parent (P.) and the parent's child (C.). The parent acts essentially as a tutor providing guidance to the child over how to develop critical thinking against being manipulated by the world surrounding the child. Considering how today's teens are enveloped in a technological environment and how much of their social and intellective life takes place through the internet, they are heavily exposed to this environment without the appropriate defenses they should have. The subtitle of this book explicitly declares the intent to protect against phone and social media addiction, so one may question why this specific matter is left to the final chapters of the book and isn't dealt with until beyond the first seven chapters. The reason is that the first seven chapters are a necessary preparation for the following chapters which are dedicated to phones and social media. The objective is to create a solid foundation of critical thinking which is required in first place, before any interaction with phones and social media is taken into consideration.
