After independence India had progressed in all fields. especially in the field of technical education. The number or institutions imparting technical education had increased by nearly fifty times during the last six decades. These institutions have contributed significantly to the industrialization efforts or the country. Technical education has made a significant contribution to lndia-s economic development. The programs which have changed the country and diversified and augmented its production since independence have been possible largely because or the manpower produced by our institutions for technical education. Since India has a huge internal market, most of the industries produce goods and products for internal consumption. Scenario. however, is changing due to the economic liberalization and globalization of Indian economy. Fearing competition from multinationals for the internal market. the emphasis is shifting to quality product and trained manpower to produce such products. The technical manpower development will have to correspondingly undergo drastic changes to produce technically ski I led and innovative manpower for the industry. Technical education system will have to provide for initial engineering education and continuing education of technical manpower. There will be greater need for industries to depend on technical institutions Cor R&D work and for the supply of highly qualified and skilled manpower. A large amount of money has been spent by the Government on committees and commissions to deliberate and recommend.
