Author Information

As a child I loved the Ramayan. To me it was like a fairy tale...only true. Not having any books to refer to I remember drawing pictures of the characters; trying to create my own book. As I grew older I found the early English translations I read were unfulfilling. They lacked the devotional and moral perspective that I had come to know through hearing the story from my parents. The old Hindi films were glamorous but difficult to come by. Even then they were hard to enjoy as I spoke little Hindi and spent most of time asking, What did they say? The other problem I had was trying to rationalize the imagery of the characters. Ancient Indian ruins depicted sparsely clad figures that bore little resemblance to film actors and modern temple figures. So what did the people in the Ramayan really look like and how did they live? To find out more I started collecting pictures and researched ancient Indian art, carvings, paintings and costumes. It wasn't until years later I began writing this Ramayan. I wanted it to be as Valmeeki wrote it; in poetic verse. I wanted it to be illustrated with costumes and architecture of the period, and I wanted it to be something anyone - adults and children alike - could pick up and enjoy. I hope it is the Ramayan you've always wanted to read.
