In 1975, at just five years old, Nelson walked through the burned remains of shops clutching a small can of margarine to survive. By the late 1980s, listening to whispered conversations in Dili, he found clarity of purpose in Xanana Gusmão's call for unity. He resolved that courage and knowledge would be his path of service. The lessons of his childhood-discipline, resilience, and the search for justice-became the foundation of his lifelong commitment to his people. As a medical student in Bandung during the 1990s, Nelson lived a double life-studying by day and organizing resistance by night. In 1998, risking his life, he secretly treated FALINTIL's Chief of Staff, Taur Matan Ruak, proving that medicine could be an instrument of resistance, healing both bodies and the spirit of a nation fighting for freedom. After the 1999 referendum, Nelson helped transform survival networks into national governance under UNTAET. Later, as Minister of Health from 2007 to 2012, he walked village roads, listened to displaced families, rebuilt hospitals, and secured training and resources from partners across the world.
