Overview

A Seat at My SoulLife is a tapestry woven with moments, both beautiful and painful. This anthology is a therapeutic collection of creative pieces and essays that aims to be a reflective mirror for the readers. Through sharing, I hope to inspire readers to sit with their emotions, even the painful ones, and discover the healing power hidden within them.It can be difficult to face our true feelings in a world that often encourages us to put on a facade of strength and happiness. The act of writing this anthology forced me to confront my own emotions and delve deeper into the root causes of my pain. By doing so, I was able to find clarity and understand that acknowledging and embracing our emotions is the first step towards healing.Every experience we go through in life has the potential to teach us valuable lessons. However, without taking the time to reflect on these experiences, we may miss out on the growth that comes from understanding ourselves better.Pain is an inevitable part of the human experience. It manifests itself in various forms - heartbreak, loss, disappointment - and can be overwhelming at times. It is essential to sit with this pain, to allow ourselves to fully experience it, rather than running away from it. Contrary to popular belief, pain is not our enemy but a messenger, whispering to us that something needs to change. By embracing the pain, we open ourselves up to growth and transformation and becoming pure Light.Within every painful experience lies a hidden medicine waiting to be discovered. By sharing, I hope to inspire readers to find the healing power within their own struggles.Life is a beautiful yet challenging journey, filled with highs and lows. This therapeutic anthology is a mirror that reflects the emotions and experiences that make us who we are. Remember, the medicine is within the pain; we just need to open ourselves up to the transformative power that lies within. May you find your Godly existence in between your healing.

Author Information

Barbara Verneus, a first-generation Indigenous Haitian American from Brooklyn, NY, has embraced midwifery as a calling deeply rooted in her ancestral lineage. Beginning her journey as a doula in 2003, she felt a profound connection to the practice after discovering her maternal family's history of midwifery. Following volunteering with the African Birth Collective in Senegal in 2006, she committed to becoming a midwife and pursued training in multiple states. In 2013, Barbara's own experience of giving birth inspired her to launch Tiny and Brave Holistic Doula Services in 2015 and pursue a master's degree in counseling with a focus on Marriage and Family. She has since worked with midwifery practices in New York, Texas, and Pennsylvania, demonstrating a passion for supporting women and families through the childbirth process.Barbara's dedication extends beyond clinical practice; she has served as an advisor to teenage mothers at PathWays PA and conducted workshops on women's, reproductive, infant, and adolescent health. Her workshops have also addressed critical issues such as racism, motherhood, mental wellness, and the historical significance of Black midwives in radical birth work. Throughout her journey, Barbara has attended over 300 births and aims to provide comprehensive and empowering care to families in urban communities and abroad. With a vision focused on holistic care and advocacy, Barbara seeks to emphasize the importance of the family unit and address the marginalization and abuse faced by many. She is committed to promoting birth equity and sustainability, believing that every individual's sovereignty is their birthright. Ultimately, her goal is to play a role in helping families thrive purposefully, contributing to the movement of birth equity and sustainability.
