A Ring of Secrets

Overview

When they steal your memories and call it a fresh start, your secrets are all you have left. Nix is the only student with a full lifetime of memories at the Academy for the Welfare of Disadvantaged Youth. The rest are orphans and delinquents sent in stasis from the Central Worlds to a distant colony planet for a chance at a better life. Between her intact memories and her principal father, Nix only has her family and the miniature android she's been rebuilding from scrap parts. When a rare Adroit ship arrives with two unscheduled students, Nix helps one hide away a mysterious ring before her memories are taken. Nix must balance the new arrival's secret and her own desire for friendship against her family's safety. Matters turn grave when pirates raid the academy, stealing away with Nix's father, students to Blank Slate and sell into galactic slavery. Nix's only hope is that her smuggler brother's ship is fast enough to catch up and save her father and friends before all the secrets come crashing down.

Author Information

Stephanie Gildart writes fantasy and science fiction, imagining worlds of wonder and hope. She received her dual MA/MFA degree in Children's Literature and Writing for Children from Simmons University. She finds some of her own hope by doing crochet, an art form where she can transform a strand of yarn into something magnificent-and when everything goes awry and she can't figure out where she made her mistakes, it's as simple as unraveling the project until she's back to where everything made sense and building from there. There might be a metaphor about learning, adapting, and growing through adversity there somewhere. She lives in Maryland with one wonderful husband and two snuggly lap dogs.
