I enjoyed A Rebel's Road Home as much, if not more, than John's original novel, A Northern Rebel. Jameson Hartford and his wife, Delilah, have qualities that few folks demonstrate in this day and age. They have a love for the south and became champions for the end of slavery prior to the Civil War. As the war ends, Jameson and his wife leave their home in a well-to-do section of Boston to return to their Serenity Plantation in South Carolina only to find the war had left its scar on the plantations, the town and its people. Vowing to rebuild, Delilah is determined to provide opportunities for former slaves and slave owners equal opportunities that allow them to work together and provide for their families, even better that they did before the war. There is much excitement and disappointment as the story progresses. You will love some characters and hate others. Overall, however, I think you will find the story moving and enjoyable... I was so happy to find a sequel to A Northern Rebel. Mr Schaefer has such a passion for the subject that like the first book I couldn't wait to get to each chapter as the plot kept not me unable to put it down. I was sorry I read it so quickly Perhaps the author will make the subject into a series? One other point as in the first book, he described his characters so well that I felt their experiences were alive!
