Overview

A reflective and uplifting study of the Book of Psalms, interspersed with a daily journal through the spring and summer of 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the UK. In response to the dramatic changes and restrictions on our lives caused by the outbreak and spread of the virus, from 15th March 2020, and for 150 days thereafter, John Nugee studied one psalm per day, reflecting on both their origins and meaning for the people who wrote them and their relevance to our lives today. A Psalm a Day brings these short commentaries together, guiding the reader through each passage of the Psalter with a daily meditation. While the Book of Psalms-a collection of songs, prayers and meditations on man's relationship with God-has inspired and comforted the faithful for over 2,000 years, revisiting this Old Testament book during the first of the UK's lockdowns provided much hope and focus for Nugee, and for fellow members of his bible study group. Alongside these analyses of the psalms, each day is marked with a diary entry taking the reader through the first five months of change as COVID-19 struck. Featuring both his personal day-to-day life and that of the country as a whole, Nugee's journal provides a fascinating snapshot of this historic period of time. Written in and clear and simple style, A Psalm a Day can be read in sequence or used as a book of reference and inspiration in conjunction with the Book of Psalms-one of the best-loved books of the Bible, as fresh and fitting today as the day the psalms in it were first written. Perfect for those looking to draw more meaning from life, those on a spiritual or religious path, and those searching for solace in a time of uncertainty and upheaval.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of 2020 left many of us feeling dis-spirited, disorientated and even anxious, as our lives lost shape and direction. This little book on the Psalms shows how personal faith and the gentle discipline of daily Bible study can hold us firm as we chart a course through such times. Written for his home bible study group, John takes us through a psalm a day and offers a fascinating reflection on his life in lockdown. John's love for God runs like a thread throughout. Each daily psalm reflection is the fruit of both careful research and his prayerful, personal response. Whether you chose to read the book through in a couple of sittings, or do as John did, and take them one day at a time, you will find yourself drawn into this beautiful and sustaining book of songs and gain an insight into how one man's faith helped him cling to God [Ps 63:8] and remember His sustaining presence and purpose for life. I commend this book to you. -Rt Revd Andrew Proud, Bishop of Reading (retired) John's ability to take the complex and make it simple has been a trademark of his life. I found the very direct and easy-to-read comments on the individual psalms both helpful and very insightful. In particular his final sentences to each psalm where he applies the eternal truths to his, and our, daily lives was a blessing and a challenge. -Hugh Griffiths LRPS, Christ Church New Malden I loved reading this book not just for its warm, devotional and illuminating comments on the Psalms, nor just for the diary that charts John's family's life in the strangest of years, but for the way the wonderful truths of the Psalms are repeatedly brought to bear on the uncertainty of life in a pandemic. An engaging, delightful read that moved me to praise the faithful, saving Lord that the Psalter reveals. -Revd Josh Skidmore, Emmanuel Church Wimbledon
