Practical Handbook of Archaeology

Overview

This illustrated practical guide to archaeology is perfect for anyone with a passion for the past. It is an excellent hands-on resource for new enthusiasts, students and volunteers attending their first dig. The varied techniques involved in planning and conducting an excavation are discussed in detail, from the initial non-invasive survey and site-walking through to processing and recording finds on site. Learn how to locate buried archaeology through map regression and the study of aerial photographs; walk a site to sample the finds turned up by farmingp; or take part in a comprehensive site survey using the latest geophysical technology. Attend a dig and make your first cut with a trowel, then proceed to fully excavate part of the site, recovering and recording evidence as you go. With over 300 colour photographs and illustrations, this is a fascinating introduction to the practice of archaeology, and the ultimate practical handbook on fieldwork techniques.
