As a child, she spent summers on her grandparents' farm, where she loved all the farm animals, especially the chickens and cows. At age 13, she even befriended a real live mouse. She received the nickname ""Dorita"" (also her Pen Name) from a pen pal named Valdez in Ecuador in the 1970s. He said that was how her name translated in his country. In Spanish, adding 'ita' is an endearing term. Doreen's love of writing ultimately led her to her twenty-five-year position as Family Editor for the Hibbing Daily Tribune.
