A Nightmare of Magic and Madness

Overview

Dungeons and Dragons meets Stephen King in this fantasy thriller. Three hundred years ago, the nations of the world defeated the Magus, a cabal of powerful magic-users intent on domination. Victory came at the cost of a continent's destruction. Mysteries and legends abound about the Magus and their horrific abilities. Ten years ago, a border war between the mage Orders and the Penkal Sects became a footnote in history, except for those who survived it. Two weeks ago, a trade caravan traveling through the Northern Wood was attacked, leaving mutated corpses and enigmatic clues. Logan Grenbrook is a young mage with the Gen'Dom Order, performing missions to improve his standing and make a little profit. When assigned to the massacre investigation, Logan considers it yet another opportunity. His positive outlook is short-lived. After contending with grumpy bounty hunters and a barkeep who keeps dangerous pets, Logan meets the party leader, a drunken Magistrate who believes in monsters, and a Penkal Guardian. Though the Guardian is Logan's age, her presence draws a decade of trauma and prejudice to the surface. A fresh attack gives them a grisly trail to follow into the dark heart of the Northern Wood. The deeper they proceed, the more bizarre the magic and savage the wildlife becomes. In mysterious ruins, they battle an abomination of nature, and find entrance to an underground complex. Within its halls, Logan faces the terror of Magus magic unbound. Even if he survives its brutal trials and a surprising betrayal, he may not prevent the world from being plunged into a fresh apocalypse.
