Overview

Besides the river Ganga, Rishikesh is a small town in the foothills of the lower Himalayas. In the proximity of the state capital Dehradun, this historic place is popularly known as the Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas and also the Yoga Capital of the World . Rishikesh is considered to be one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimages and for ages, saints and sages have been coming here to meditate and gain wisdom. According to the legends, Lord Rama also din penance here after killing Ravana, the King of Lanka, as Ravana was a great devotee of Lord Shiva who possessed great wisdom, devotion, and generosity. The river Ganga is considered holy, and today the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Rishikesh is also one of the major resting places for the sages as well as tourists before moving to the higher mountains for the pilgrimage. The Beatles also visited Rishikesh in 1968 and during their stay in Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram, they composed many popular songs of their self-titled double album called the White Album .
