A Mistaken Life: Is it possible that the only thing that exists between today and yesterday is distance of mind?

Overview

Roberto lives in a new town, but thinks he has always lived there. He finds himself holding his yearbook from 1972, but doesn't know why. He opens it to a picture of a little town, Cloverdale, in Northern California. He feels the warmth, the familiarity, and is convinced that it is there where his past resides. He sees a picture of a girl he has never met, yet is convinced that she is and always has been the love of his life. His dreams and memories intertwine with the yearbook, and his new world is born. But something isn't right. Reoccurring dreams of people he has never met bring back unattached emotions and memories of a past he finds impossible to recognize, let alone accept. Late one night, as he looks at his yearbook, he comes face to face with a truth too revealing, impossible to ignore. He gets in his car that same rainy night and heads to Cloverdale High School in search of answers, but the staff doesn't have the answers he was looking for. They have no record of him ever attending Cloverdale High School. His world comes crashing down, leading to a life of homelessness and destitution. Forever in psychotic episodes in search of a past that never existed. Fifteen years later, Margaret, a retired teacher in Cloverdale, sees a homeless man. Who is this man? How did he end up here? Paul, a policeman, runs his prints. He finds out that he was in a mental institution and had disappeared. His name is Roberto Pena. Dr. Culpa, a retired psychiatrist from the institution, receives a phone call from Paul. Questions reignite his memory of Roberto. He heads to Cloverdale to help solve the mystery. They observe Roberto from a distance for several days and conclude that they may be able to help him. They add a sedative to a thermos of soup. Once sedated, Paul and a couple of volunteer firemen transport him to Margaret's house. Dr. Culpa keeps him sedated and medicates him for many days. Margaret and Dr. Culpa become inseparable amid their journey to help Roberto, and they fall in love. Roberto wakes up to a world of strangers. Who are these people? How did I get here? Who is this looking at me in the mirror? How old am I? Now we have to ask whose yearbook was it? What caused him to erase his past and to reinvent another? Is it possible to have been born to the wrong place, to the wrong people? Is it possible to have lived a mistaken life?
