Dewdney is well known for books on science and mathematics such as The Armchair Universe, but this is something different - perhaps too different for many tastes. In an attempt to dress up the story of mathematics, he has used the device of a fictional journey in which he meets key figures from history. He certainly covers a lot of ground, from the ancient Greeks to thinking machines. But it is not at all clear that the format helps the exposition - a kind of mathematical equivalent of Sophie's World. (Kirkus UK)
