She worked in the media industry for about twenty years before she was appointed as head of the postgraduate Department of Journalism at SU in 2001. She is author, co-author or editor of several publications, as well as author of close to 50 peer-reviewed articles. Rabe is a member of several professional associations, both nationally and internationally. She was on the first Rector's List of SU's 25 top researchers across all faculties and receiver of the Rector's Award in Teaching Excellence.
