OverviewA Log of the Vincennes, first published in 1947, is a unique, in-depth look at life aboard the navy heavy-cruiser Vincennes (CA-44) during World War II. The book, based in part on the daily log kept by Lt. Donald Hugh Dorris, was prepared by Dorris' father after his son was lost in the sinking of the Vincennes. The ship took part in important naval actions, including forming part of the convoy protecting the U.S.S. Hornet and Doolittle's bombers, and the battles at Midway, Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, where she was sunk on August 9, 1942. Additional chapters recount shipmate's personal memories, Dorris' letters to his parents, and survivor's experiences after the ship was heavily damaged and sunk by Japanese gunfire. Illustrated with maps and photographs.
