A Kiss from a Thistle: Uncovering the Forgotten Layers of Scotland's past

Overview

I wrote this book because so many people across the world feel a connection to Scotland yet struggle to understand the history that shaped it. People know moments and names. They know legends and fragments. But the full timeline is often blurred and the deeper history is rarely explained in a way that feels clear or complete. I wanted to set everything out in a simple and human sequence so that anyone, whether they live in Scotland or carry Scottish ancestry across the seas, can finally follow the history with confidence. I chose to peel back the layers of Scotland's past the way one might peel an onion taking each layer gently and carefully until the full shape of the nation becomes easier to see. This is not an academic book. It is written for ordinary readers who want to understand Scotland without needing specialist language or training. I have focused on clarity, compassion and accessibility. My aim is to guide readers through the events and the people who shaped this land, and to do so in a way that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. The first part of the book follows Scotland through the major turning points of its recorded past. Edward the First, Wallace, Bruce, Bannockburn, Flodden, the Reformation, Mary Queen of Scots, the Clearances and the long struggle for survival. When these events are placed in their proper sequence, the history becomes far easier to follow and the meaning behind each chapter becomes clearer. The second part of the book looks further back into Scotland's deeper ancestry. I explore who the Gaels were, where they came from, and how many different peoples across time helped create the Scotland we know today. I look at ancient traditions of kingship, long forgotten migrations and the layers of belief and memory that sit beneath our recorded history. I wrote this book so that Scotland's history would no longer feel confusing or distant. I want readers to understand where this nation came from and how its people were shaped by centuries of courage, loss, struggle and survival. This book is for anyone who has ever searched for their roots or wondered how the pieces of Scotland's past fit together. It is a clear and heartfelt guide to a remarkable history, told with care, respect and a deep love for the land and its people.
