OverviewThe ancient texts of India carry a whole lot of discourse about 'Self'. The questions of Upanishads (Ancient text from India) revolving around the identity of self and beyond provoke our mind to question and rethink about our identities. Who I am? I am a human flesh who loves writing also I am a brown Indian also I am a Hindu also I belong to a caste also I belong to a state in India and the list goes on... Multiple identities revolves around us. Some we choose while other we inherit. Our identities play a major role in our society. It's a known fact that having a passport of certain country will make the visa process easier in many destination countries. Some Identities enjoy privilege over other identities while some are mocked just because of their identity. Movements like Civil Rights movement, Women's movement, LGBTQ+ movement ...etc are fought to create space and equality among different identities that humanity wears. The question is- Why we propelled to fight for our identity? What makes one identity threat to other identity? Why identity matter so much? Answer of all these question lies in the fact that we deliberately choose to forget to visualise the real human behind the multiple identities. We assume identity as reality and fail to see the true reality. My faith, name, nation isn't reality. It is collective imagination of me and the society in which I grew. My colour, gender, appearance and height are my biological marker which is product of genetics and climatic condition in which I grew. What may be unique to me is how I interact with my biological marker and socio-cultural marker and that too is influenced by the education I acquire, resources which I can access. Beside that I am alike all other fellow human being. The fact is humanity existed before identity. It is only later we started wearing identity and then somehow, we forget to unbutton it. This assumption of identity as the only reality are the cause of all sorts of identity crisis and conflicts. My novella tries to create a discourse regarding identity. Inspired from contemporary socio-political reality of South Asia. It presents story of Faiz/Gopal/Illem who journeyed across Bangladesh, India and Myanmar (Burma) to find his true self. The journey consists of a lot of knowing and unknowing in order to acquire vision to imagine self in entirety, the true self which isn't isolated with others.
