Author Information

Arthur Anthony Macdonell was a British linguist and Sanskrit scholar born on May 11, 1854, in India. He was the son of Mary Jane Maclean and Alexander Anthony Macdonell, the 6th of Lochgarry. Macdonell received his education at the University of G ttingen and Leipzig University, which paved the way for his significant contributions to the study of Sanskrit and Indian linguistics. He became known for his comprehensive works on Sanskrit literature and language, including a history of Sanskrit literature that remains a key reference in the field. In 1891, he married Louise Lowson, and they had a child, Alasdair Somerled Macdonell. Macdonell's academic career was marked by his deep engagement with Sanskrit texts and his efforts to make these works accessible to the Western world. He passed away on December 28, 1930, at the age of 76. His scholarly legacy continues to influence the study of Sanskrit and the understanding of Indian literature.
