If you are a man, learn how to avoid lifting the dinghy engine, hauling up the anchor chain and clogging the toilet. If you are a woman, learn how to avoid steering and the politically incorrect jobs of shopping, cooking and cleaning. Pay attention to the sections on roommate assignment and potty training. You may become more intimate with your roommate than either of you would like. A beginning sailor who is inadequately potty trained can create for himself or herself a situation of almost infinite embarrassment. Don't skip the potty training section even though it is unavoidably impolite. Help with cooking but do not take responsibility for it. You can only lose. Don't let the dinghy drift you to Panama. Do not let the many perils described in this book, perhaps reinforced by your status as a novice sailor, deter you from group cruising. The author has lived in Princeton Borough, the epicenter of the Princeton universe and cruised many times in the Caribbean with the Princetonians . With them he has served as crew, with heartfelt irresponsibility, and as captain despite the advice he gives to leave such responsibility to others. Whatever he recommends to avoid, he has experienced many times except that he has never served as a Purple Pink Love Lady nor pursued same above or below deck. He owns an old sailboat moored near his home in Connecticut full of systems and electronics he neither understands nor can fix but for which he cannot escape responsibility. That is why he likes to go to the Caribbean with the Princetonians, rent someone else's sailboat, sail it and at the end of the cruise step off it, forget about it and fly home.
