He was Gertrude Jekyll's brother-in-law and Sir Anthony Eden's great uncle. His account of the restoration of the Italian garden on the Giudecca which he bought in 1884 was first published in 1902. Marie-Therese Weal went to London after graduating in English at La Sorbonne. She stayed for 18 years, studying Russian and working in publishing, before moving back to Paris, where she teaches and translates for a living.
