Overview

Inspired by a true story of love, selflessness, perseverance, and determination, A Family is Love, And It's Just Right for Us was written as a gift for Jessie's new sister Kim and her family. Kim saved Jessie's biological sister's life by donating her kidney in 2021. This delightfully illustrated, rhythmic, rhyming picture book encourages and empowers children to stand up to bullies and support what they believe in, positively! A Family is Love, And It's Just Right for Us fosters inclusivity, love, empathy, understanding and strength while entertaining readers, young and old. A beautiful example of LGBTQ+ families and some of their challenges. A Family is Love, And It's Just Right for Us is a wonderful tool to encourage discussions of family values, acceptance, diversity, strength, courage, and inclusiveness. Jessie Hionis, with over 3 decades of teaching experience, aims to share her expertise with bullying through this beautiful story about family, love, and positivity. Besides being a teacher, pedagogical and literary consultant, Jessie is the author of Miracle, A Parent's Blessing, A Newborn Child and has co-authored several learning materials published by CHENELIÈRE ÉDUCATION that are vastly used in schools today.

Fantastic story!!!! For the classroom and the home. A must read for everyone that believes in inclusiveness and love!! A wonderful story! Beautifully written and illustrated. The message is in tune with today's realities. LGBTQ+ families, and anyone that wants to teach kids about bullying, acceptance and standing up for love! Beautiful, heartfelt message! Well written and beautifully illustrated!!! I love this story! Teaches kids respect, and helps them stand up to bullies. My kids want me to read it over and over again. They love and predict the rhymes. Lots of fun. Absolutely love this book and everything it stands for! Love the journey of motherhood and the diversity represented in the family unit. This text covers the unfortunate experience that many kids will have with bullying and shows a positive way to respond. This book is fun, yet so realistic. Well written and the pictures are awesome. Our kids love it! Oh my goodness I got this so I can read it to my little girl before bed. It's so adorable, from the animations to the rhymes. The story is exactly what I want my daughter to learn. Author Information

Jessie Hionis loved nursery rhymes as a child. Something fascinated her about their rhythm, and she found herself singing them again and again until her older sisters would beg her to stop.Jessie's mom had a knack for rhyming words, and she managed to turn everyday events into entertaining, rhythmic, and rhyming songs. Jessie remembers mom's spontaneously invented lullabies and songs that turned everyday events at home, into beautiful melodies.""I'll wash the dishes. You send me kisses."" ""Drink your juice, you silly goose!""It's no wonder that words and the play of utterances fascinated Jessie. She started writing stories at 12 years old, and of course, they were mostly rhyming stories. While studying to be a teacher, Jessie learned of the importance of rhyme. Verse helps children to develop phonemic awareness, pronunciation, articulation, aids in reading and in the understanding of concepts. Knowing that literacy skills are strengthened through rhyme validated Jessie's passion for words and rhythm. She then intentionally used her rhyming words to teach, while she entertained elementary school students for 37 years. She has actively trained a plethora of aspiring teachers and was a pedagogical and literary consultant throughout her career in education.Jessie Hionis has authored several learning materials published by Chenelière Education of Montreal, Quebec, which are used in schools today. Since retiring from her career in education and teaching, she has decided to fully invest in her long-term passion, the creation and publication of children's stories. Jessie loves to travel and lives in Montreal, Canada with her husband Chris, who often acts as the audience for her stories, since she retired from the classroom.Jessie's stories are tested and true-to life. Mostly inspired by situations arising in her student's lives during her teaching career, Jessie's stories entertain, while discreetly providing valuable tools for children, parents, and teachers to help deal with challenging situations that are simply part of life. Jessie's stories are weaved to inspire young minds, captivate children, parents, and teachers alike. They aim to provide strength, perseverance, understanding and acceptance to children and their families. As far as back as she can remember, Amélie was holding art supplies in her hands. The little girl from Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, painted, drew, and took every opportunity to express her colorful ideas. Her family attended countless presentations and galleries prepared with her cousins at grandma's house. She and her cousins were proud of their creations, and everyone absolutely needed to see their art!Later on, Amélie participated in several art competitions and was always grateful to see her parents, her little sister and grandma in the front row, cheering her on. She is truly grateful for her family's involvement and support.Once grown up, Amélie chose to study Arts and Sciences of Animation at Laval University, where she specialized in 2D animation. For three years, she abandoned her papers, pens and art supplies while she learned, practiced and mastered digital arts. During her journey, she met many talented artists that pushed her to surpass her artistic interpretation and helped her find her artistic style. She and her colleagues were proud to have had the opportunity to see their animation short nominated in various festivals such as the SWIFF in Canada and in the United States! Amélie is an avid traveler. She walked the Camino de Santiago twice from France. She loves the tranquility of walking alone in the mountains and in fields. She also loves to meet people of different cultures as many have fascinating stories to tell. Amélie finds culturally rich stories truly inspiring. She draws inspiration from her travels to create colorful and nature-based works. Now working as a freelance artist in animation and illustration, Amélie welcomes any and all challenges that keep her artistic creativity sharp!
