His tenure as superintendent spanned 20 years in multiple school divisions. During his first superintendency, a humbling encounter with a kindergarten student, who asked if he was the ""stupidintendent,"" left a lasting impression. As the superintendent of Henry County, Virginia, he embraced the local legend of fairy stones. Dr. Martin received numerous accolades, including the 2007 Tech Savvy Superintendent Award and recognition from the Smithsonian Institute for his laptop initiative.
