From the Mirthful Mind of THE Bookman of Farcical Comedy, Christopher Moore... CHARLIE ASHER is nervous about becoming a father. He soon finds he has bigger things to worry about as he watches his beloved wife RACHEL die with their newborn in her arms while a mysterious stranger in a mint green suit stands over her bed. This tall dark trespasser, MINTY FRESH, eventually becomes Charlie's ally as he learns the ropes of being a Death Merchant in The City of Two Bridges while maintaining the facade of doting father to daughter SOPHIE, brother to lesbian sister JANE and employer of ex-cop RAY MACY and Goth-girl LILY, who discovers his secret while going through the mail at Asher's Secondhand, the thrift store Charlie inherited from his father. INSPECTOR RIVERA keeps tabs on Charlie as he roams the streets of San Francisco getting into ridiculous situations while in search of Soul Vessels, a daunting task to which he has been assigned (and cannot shirk!). If he gets behind for even a moment THE MORRIGAN, bellicose sister trio of Irish lore, taunt, tease and threaten him from the storm drains. Charlie hooks up with AUDREY, a student of Tibetan Buddhism who practices the lost art of The P'howa of Forceful Projection to save souls she mistakenly believes Charlie and Minty are holding hostage. She has assembled an army of re-animated creatures fabricated from animal carcasses which she clothes in outlandish costumes. The legion of mutants travel with Charlie down into The Underworld (the storm drains that run beneath the city) to retrieve Rachel's soul where they face-off with ORCUS, a winged beast who plots with The Morrigan to take over The Above. MRS. KORJEV and MRS. LING add international flavor as the wacky neighbors who care for little Sophie while Hounds from Hell come to protect her from The Forces of Darkness and though they prove a challenge to care for, the huge dogs always come to the rescue. Local vagabond THE EMPEROR calmly observes the entire spectacle with his canine companions BUMMER and LAZARUS as we wait for the big reveal... just who is THE LUMINATUS?
