A Different Shade Of Green: My Adventures In The Land Of Hope And Glory

Overview

A Different Shade Of Green is a humorous and heartwarming memoir that explores the cultural contrasts between Germany and England through the eyes of a curious and candid outsider. Blending witty anecdotes with sharp observations, the author recounts her journey of moving from structured, efficient Germany to the wonderfully unpredictable world of British life. From mastering the art of small talk and deciphering the British obsession with queuing, to navigating the quirks of the NHS and the confusion of driving on the left, this book offers a delightful tour of cultural adaptation and everyday misadventures. Each chapter captures the joys and challenges of settling into a new country, revealing how moments of confusion often lead to laughter, growth, and unexpected connection. Whether you're an expat, an Anglophile, or simply someone who enjoys cross-cultural storytelling, the book delivers an engaging, relatable, and insightful perspective on what it means to feel at home somewhere new-by embracing the unfamiliar with humour and heart.

Author Information

Britta Freemantle was born in Wetzlar and now lives with her English husband on the Dorset coast in southern England. While others come here on holiday, she can often be found wading through tidal flats, collecting fossils, or explaining to guests in a brisk sea breeze why the British insist on calling everything ""lovely"" - no matter the weather. After many years in education, she swapped the classroom for a tour bus and has since been working as a tour guide. With a keen sense for history, language and the quirks of cross-cultural encounters, she introduces visitors to British life - sprinkled with personal anecdotes in which she herself doesn't always come off unscathed.Writing has been part of her life since childhood. She went on to complete a Master's degree in Creative Writing, won a regional writing award in Dorset in 2018, and has published several articles in English magazines - naturally in English, and always with a cup of tea within reach. Her first book is the result of years of experiences between tea time, left-hand traffic and the everyday absurdities of British life. The result is an entertaining and self-deprecating tribute to a life lived between two cultures.
