A Day With the End of the Alphabet

Overview

A Day with the End of the Alphabet exposes readers to the sounds and interactions of the last five letters of the alphabet: V W X Y Z. Their stories help remind readers to try their ""other"" sounds when decoding an unknown word. It is one of an innovative alphabet book series that uses stories as ""cognitive hooks,"" a research-based learning strategy that makes it quicker and easier for learners to retain and retrieve information by connecting it to something already known or experienced. The knowledge is internalized through story, making it as accessible as one's own thinking. The Secret Lives of Letters books are for everyone hoping the children in their lives-especially struggling readers-will approach reading with confidence and bravely interact with language, developing a lifelong love of reading. This book can be read in one sitting or read in parts to highlight a specific decoding strategy or spelling pattern.

Author Information

After receiving her Masters in Teaching from George Fox University, Theresa thoroughly enjoyed teaching kindergarten, first grade, and second grade for nearly twenty years. In her classroom, she created a world where the letters can finally talk for themselves and explain the myriad of sounds they produce. Why? Because her students struggled with simple words, often because ""one letter makes one sound"" does not hold true in English. Her continued passion to help students succeed is the impetus to expose, through her stories, the secret lives of letters that surround us.She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her cats, Yama and Zuki. She has two grown sons and looks forward to sharing these stories with her grandchildren.
