OverviewSign language (SL) is a visual language used all over the world by deaf and speech impaired people for communicating among themselves. Ac- cording to the 2011 census, India has more than 2 million speech impaired people and 5 million deaf people. India has less than 300 human interpreters for deaf and speech impaired people. For the re- placement of human interpreters, technology can be helpful to build a machine interpreter. Computer vision methods can be used to analyze, acquire, pro- cess and understand image information. Consequently, computer vi- sion has gained popularity among researchers. The application of com- puter vision involves shape estimation, motion estimation, segmenta- tion and analysis. Computer-vision-based SLR can enable the building of a real- time machine interpreter system that can be used to bridge the com- munication gaps between deaf and speech impaired people and non- disabled people.
