In Australia, she taught at Flinders University, South Australia, and later at the University of Tasmania. Her first two books were based on her MA and Ph.D. theses: Maternity in Dispute: New Zealand, 1920–1939 (1986) and Mothers and King Baby: Infant Survival and Welfare in an Imperial World; Australia, 1880–1950 (1997). She co-authored A History of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific (2000) with Donald Denoon and Remaking the Tasman World (2008) with Peter Hempenstall and Shaun Goldfinch.
