Drawing heavily upon the war between England and France, this novel shows the collapse of the meta narrative of progress and western civilization. The war mongers are condemned in this novel and the opening lines of the novel have become classic. This novel is a swansong and masterwork of genius. The present book attempts to describe the deeper meaning inherent in the novel and tries to analyse it from various angles. About The Author Subhajit Bhadra is an Asst Professor in the PG Department of English, Bongaigaon College, Bongaigaon, Assam. He is a gold medalist from the Tezpur Central University. Till now he has published various national and international seminar papers in books and anthologies.
