Excerpt from A Complete Nautical Pocket Dictionary: English-German and German-English The genesis of this work may be briefly told. In his capacity as interpreter at the Hamburg Law Courts, the author felt at the beginning a great want for a handy and complete nautical dictionary, and, therefore, set at once to work to collect the words and phrases picked up from the examination of witnesses and the study of log books. If, therefore, he was not a nautical man, yet he was wide awake as to what was required of such book. The compass of the book would not admit any explanation for technicalities which, moreover, would have necessitated the collaboration of nautical and engineering people. There are some few books of similar description edited by experts with plenty of explanations, and it might, therefore, be thought there was no occasion, for this publication of an outsider. However, such books are more voluminous than complete, and more instructive than practical. A translator, whether professional or not, wants to get the translation of a word at one glance; it is in the first line quite indifferent to him what the word really signifies. Strict alphabetical order throughout the book, absence of illustrations and explanations, are, therefore, essential for facilitating his task. If a word has various applications, the difference is always made sufficiently clear without any attempt at becoming in structive.
