OverviewWith the global availability of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and the continuing growth of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, especially for inertial sensing; cost effective inertial positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technology is being integrated into numerous geo-refenced applications. The document reviews the inertial sensing problem, examining sensor technology, geo-pointing control architecture, and PNT applications. Four topics are discussed: (1) Feedback control fundamentals since sightline control (SLC) is the cornerstone of most inertial pointing applications. (2) Feedback control using the Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) controller, possibly the most versatile controller in use, with several PID configurations applied to SLC for inertial pointing and locating. (3) Detailed applications of SLC architectures and sensor data collection requirements to inertial pointing and locating. (4) Descriptions of inertial sensor technologies integrated with SLC techniques in applications using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).
