A Charlie Chaplin War: Two Novels of British Intelligence in World War 1

Audio Format

Overview

Two novels inspired by the author's personal experience in British Intelligence during the First World War: in which Naval Intelligence officer Roger Waterlow, stuck ashore in a sweltering country in South-eastern Europe, and working from scraps of gossip gathered by his ramshackle network of agents, struggles to make a real difference in the war, against the indifference and incompetence of the British authorities. First, in Extremes Meet, he seeks to show up a blatant violation of the country's 'neutrality' by its pro-German king; and then, in The Three Couriers, he attempts to capture the papers of messengers carrying incriminating correspondence to Berlin that might give the Entente powers vital insights into German intentions.

Author Information

Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie (1883-1972) was a British author of fiction, biography, and history. Born in England into a theatrical family, Mackenzie was ardently interested in his Scottish heritage, and was one of the founders of the National Party of Scotland, which later became part of the modern Scottish National Party. His most famous fictional works are Whisky Galore, which was adapted into a highly successful British comedy film made by Ealing Studios; and Monarch of the Glen, which inspired a popular and long-running BBC television series. Graham Scott is a narrator and voice actor based in the UK. As well as solo performances of works by authors including PG Wodehouse, Charles Dickens, R Austin Freeman, Dorothy L. Sayers, HC Bailey, Jules Verne, Anna Katherine Green, Joseph Conrad, GK Chesterton, Patricia Wentworth, A.E.W. Mason, and John Buchan, Graham is also a regular performer in group productions with both Voices of Today and The Online Stage. Website: GrahamScottAudio.com.
