A Century of Grace: A 106-Year Old Lady's Memoir of Faith, Family, and Strength

Overview

Mary Antetomaso was born in Manhattan in 1920, the daughter of Italian immigrants who arrived in America with courage, determination, and a belief that family came before everything else. She was the second-youngest of twelve children in a lively household filled with music, laughter, arguments, and love. For a time the family lived in two apartments just to fit everyone under one roof. Eventually her father built a large home in the Bronx so the whole clan could finally live together. It became a place where sisters harmonized at family gatherings, stories were told around the table, and every child learned the meaning of hard work and loyalty. Mary grew up in the middle of that wonderful chaos. Bright in school and quick with humor, she earned straight A's and graduated from the respected Eugenia Childs High School. But her real education came from the colorful world around her: hardworking parents, strong sisters, neighborhood characters, and the endless surprises that come with a big Italian family. Her father, Frank (Cosmo) Antetomaso, had once owned a ship with his brother before coming to America. Her mother, Philomena-known to everyone as Fannie-came from Naples and brought with her the traditions, food, and warmth of the old country. Together they built a life that balanced hardship with joy. In these pages Mary recalls the small moments that make a life meaningful: sisters singing in harmony, family celebrations that lasted long into the night, and the humor that helped everyone through difficult times. Friends remember Mary as someone who could make people laugh without even trying. One family friend once joked that she reminded him of Lucille Ball-always quick with a funny remark and never afraid to see the humor in everyday life. This memoir is more than one woman's story. It is the story of immigrant families in New York during the early twentieth century, when determination, faith, and family ties carried people through uncertain times. Warm, humorous, and deeply human, Mary's story reminds us that history is not only found in textbooks. It lives in kitchens, living rooms, and family gatherings where ordinary people build extraordinary lives. If you enjoy stories of immigrant families, New York history, and the unforgettable personalities that shape our lives, Mary's memories will feel like sitting at the family table listening to a wonderful story. And like the best family stories, you may find yourself laughing one minute and wiping away a tear the next.
