OverviewIndia is a country with a diverse culture and deep religious sentiments. Temples in India are world famous for their grandeur and beauty. There are many shaktipeethas in India. Shakti peeth meaning ' seat of power' are places of worship dedicated to the Goddess shakti. There are 18, 51, 52, 64, or 108 shakti peetha according to different Puranas. These shalktipeetha are named according to the numbers it holds, like, Adi shaktipeetha, astadasa shaktipeetha, or 51 shaktipeetha. According to devi purana, the places where Devi Sati's body parts fell on Earth is called shaktipeetha. 51 shaktipeeth have had special importance in Santan Dharma. According to Indian mythology and devi purana, after the death of Goddess sati, lord shiva became very angry and began to perform the tandava, a divine dance of distruction. To pacify shiva, lord Vishnu intervened and cut the body of sati with his sudarshan Chakra into 51 pieces, which then fell on earth creating shaktipeeth. These shrines are spread across the Indian subcontinent and are considered the most important pilgrimage sites for followers of Hinduism.
