The novel centers on a ""touching"" incident involving model hero Liu Feng and the female singer he secretly loves, unfolding a story set within a military performance troupe of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Set in the waning days of the Cultural Revolution in the 1970s, inside an old red-brick building in a southwestern city, a group of young military men and women in the prime of their youth experience love and betrayal, desire and confinement, war and survival. The story weaves through the emotional entanglements and intersections of characters such the simple-hearted ""good man"" Liu Feng, the collectively ostracized He Xiaoman, the pampered princess Lin Dingding, and the narrator Xiao Suizi. Their paths diverge dramatically over four decades, leading to life outcomes both vastly different and unexpectedly connected. In April 2017, the novel's first edition was published in Beijing after censorship and revisions. On December 15th of the same year, the film Fang Hua (Youth), written by the author, directed by Feng Xiaogang, and starring Huang Xuan, premiered in China and worldwide. A key purpose of this overseas edition is to present the uncensored original version to readers.

严歌苓，女，生于上海，少年从军，二十岁从文。1986年出版第一本长篇小说，同年加入中国作家协会。代表作有：《扶桑》,《人寰》,《白蛇》，《少女小渔》，《第九个寡妇》、《小姨多鹤》、《金陵十三钗》、《穗子物语》《陆犯焉识》等作品。严于1989年出国留学，就读于芝加哥哥伦比亚艺术学院，获文学创作艺术硕士学位。自1990年严陆续在海外发表了近百篇文学作品，曾获得台湾和香港十项文学奖，在国内也获得多项文学奖。2007年严出版了第一部以英文直接创作的长篇小说《赴宴者》，受到英、美评论界的好评，并被BBC广播电台选入小说连播。根据严的小说改编、并由严参加编剧的电影《少女小渔》、《天浴》、分别获得亚太电影节六项大奖和金马奖七项大奖，根据严的长篇小说《金陵十三钗》、《陆犯焉识》改编、由张艺谋导演执导的影片分别参展于柏林和嘎纳电影节。严的小说被译为英、法、荷、意、德、日、西班牙、葡萄牙、希伯来，阿拉伯，瑞典文，维吾尔语等21种语言。 Yan Geling 嚴歌苓 is one of the most acclaimed novelists and screenwriters in the Chinese language and a well-established writer in English. Born in Shanghai, she served with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) during the Cultural Revolution, starting at age twelve as a dancer in an entertainment troupe. Ms. Yan published her first novel in 1986 and has been writing constantly ever since. Many of her works have been adapted for film and television, working with famous Chinese directors Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Feng Xiaogang, Ang Lee, Li Shaohong and Joan Chen. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Ms. Yan holds an MFA in Fiction Writing from Columbia College, Chicago. She has published over 40 books and has won over 30 literary and film awards. Her works have been translated into twenty-one languages. Her literary and film work after March 2020 has been unofficially banned in China after she wrote an essay criticizing the Chinese government's initial handling of the COVID-19 crisis. She resides in Berlin and is co-owner of New Song Media GmbH, which she and her husband Lawrence Walker founded to continue to publish her work and produce her films.
