31 days of Silence is a true story of not only confinement and solitude but also a family trying to do their best within it. Rose and Matthew Martinelli were incarcerated for their business of selling family DVDs. They were taken from their home and their children and grandchildren. They were sentenced to ten years, longer sentences than what murderers can get off with. After years of incarceration and appeals, they've seen more things than they'd ever expected and learned what silence is and what it does, and how to cope with it. The title of the book refers to the thirty-one days that Rose Martinelli was forced to spend in the hole, or solitary confinement, not once but four times altogether, after making the humble mistake of requesting a room change during her time at in Federal prison. The experience was life changing in more ways than one.
