Baiping Liang is a software engineer and writer, originally from Beijing, China, now living in the United States. He graduated from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences with a focus on English news reporting and writing, and later earned two master's degrees from the University of Denver-one in international economics and another in computer science and mathematics. A lifelong lover of novels, history, and travel, Liang has also practiced martial arts since childhood. During China's Cultural Revolution, at only sixteen, he was sent to the vast steppe of Inner Mongolia, the eastern edge of the Eurasian grasslands. There, in isolation and hardship, he survived with courage, resilience, and the words of writers such as Jack London, Hemingway, and Turgenev. By the dim tallow lamp in a lonely yurt, he devoured the classics his librarian mother had given him, finding solace amid scorching summers and bitter winters. Years later, driven by his dreams, he crossed the Pacific and entered the technology revolution. Now retired, he pieces together memories of his fragmented youth. He went to the steppe a city boy and returned a tough Mongol. His hope is that his story will be remembered-and that the loyal dogs and horses of the steppe, his true companions, will not be forgotten. Under the dim tallow lamp in a lonely yurt, he devoured the words in the literary giants' books his librarian mom gave him, finding solace and comfort in the searing heat and freezing cold. Years later, encouraged by his dreams, he kept moving on until he crossed the Pacific Ocean and dived into the technology revolution. He's now retired and finds time to pieces together the fragmented teenage years. He went to the steppe a city boy and returned a tough Mongol.
