这是一本十年前就完稿的书，但是在2015年和2017年先后三次、分别经由三家出版社，都在临近最后环节被撤下，其中一次已经交印却在开机前被紧急叫停。其诞生可谓命运多舛，恰如中国自由主义或者知识分子过去十年的命运。 这本书还是有关东南亚民主转型经验，特别是转型失败国家的持久威权问题，这在东南亚尤其典型，对中国的民主转型和持久威权无疑有着相当重要的借鉴意义，至少可以让知识分子们破除快速民主转型的念想，更现实主义地面对一个对公民社会不友好的威权制度可能长期存在的前景。当然，这个前景是基于东南亚的历史经验，因为它们有着与中国相似的现代化转型道路、以及中国革命的介入，不仅具有所谓地方知识的价值，还有着普遍的意义，尤其是中国与东南亚的互相嵌入关系对持久威权的加固，都是长期崇拜美欧、也对民主化转型抱有浪漫幻想的中国知识分子们轻视的。这是本书写作的初衷，为作者在清华大学讲授公民社会理论之外提供一个经验主义的区域参照，并提醒中国的知识分子和自由主义者需要保持清醒，对中国的晚期威权主义的持久性做好充分的思想准备，才可能长期坚守。
