Overview

If you do something many times, you will get really good at it. The problem is that it is often tiring or frustrating to do this. For example, if you want to improve your French vocabulary skills, you could just read every word in your favorite French to English dictionary again and again. But this is difficult and sometimes impossible to do. Therefore, it makes much more sense to adopt creative ways of vocabulary learning and word list automation. This book presents a very effective method of doing this. One key problem that advanced and intermediate students in a new foreign language face is that of retention. You are being bombarded with a thousand new words every week, and at the end of that week, a totally new curriculum is introduced. It is sometimes difficult to get the time to consolidate, to catch up on all the new vocabulary elements that you have recently absorbed, and to fix those in your memory permanently so that they become a part of your real time language word list skill set. This book aims to solve that problem, and to fill that gap. Over my many years as a language teacher and coach, I have observed that students of French learn and retain best when: 1. They are given situations of uncertainty in their vocabulary revision exercises: In this book, I have been able to model that by giving multiple choices for each question, and by ensuring that two or three of them can easily be confused. This is a good approximation to a situation that might arise in real life, while speaking French. 2. They are given a mixture of easy and hard exercises: This is very important; I have an internal grading system for all my questions, and I ensure that the average grade for the questions within any chapter is the same across chapters, but with wide variance from question to question. After all, I don't want my students to ever get bored! 3. A clear reminder that many words are the same in English and French: This always gives learners a feeling of accomplishment, because it shows them clearly that a large part of their vocabulary study is already done!
