写这本书的动因，源于自己在疫情中的亲身经历。 2020年1月15日，当我踏上回国之路看望术后的母亲时，根本没有想到自己会陷入一场百年不遇的疫情中，家乡封城，举国惊惶。此后，我在国内滞留了两个多月，直至3月21日才艰难返美。 回到美国后，又赶上疫情高峰期，纽约、新泽西等地封城。女儿在家上网课，先生在家办公。除了先生偶尔去买菜，我们几乎足不出户。后来在后院搭了一个简易的羽毛球场，总算有了户外运动。 4月6日，公公在国内去世，先生未能回国奔丧，悲伤难抑。4月7日，教会一个关系要好的姐妹去世，我们未能见上最后一面，遗憾万分。紧接着，陆续听到认识的朋友本人或者他们的家人染上新冠，甚至有人因此去世。 越来越多的悲伤积压在我的心头，如一团团浓墨般的乌云。那时便想，新冠疫情是我们这代人独特的经历，必须记录下来。官方的宏大叙事已经够多了，我要做的是，在宏大叙事之外找到另一种可能 --记录具体个人在这场疫情中的命运。将来如果有人要研究这场百年不遇的疫情，或许我的文字可以起到一点资料性的作用。
