OverviewAs science advances, an evolutionary gap is opening up between the technologies we're creating and our capacity to use them wisely. Christopher Gayford argues that the gap in our evolution relates to emotion. He makes a powerful case for the unique role of the arts in our emotional development and argues that arts education is vital if we're to close the evolutionary gap. Outlining a new deal for education, he calls for curricula to include 25% shares for the arts, humanities, sciences and sport respectively, and explores the challenges that will need to be overcome if such a balance is to be found. A central problem in education relates to the misapplication of scientific methodologies, which he gathers under the broad heading of scientism. Gayford unpacks how scientism has come to dominate education and policymaking, and argues that, to make matters worse, arts pedagogy has become atrophied and lost touch with the driving force behind artistic expression, emotion. 25% - How the Arts can make Education Whole, focuses on the role of emotion in the arts and how in schools, colleges and universities, understanding, nurturing and celebrating emotion is essential.
