This is not a technical book concerning .22 L.R ballistics nor is it a guide to African Ornithology or Wildlife, since there are many books already that deal with this subject concerning the habits of the small game species in Africa, thoroughly and comprehensively.It is Not a story book or work of fiction... So what is it then? I would say that this little book is, in essence, a romantic book, in that it can take its place comfortably on the Big Game hunter's book rack, alongside the works of Robert Ruark, Ernest Hemingway, Selous, 'Pondoro' Taylor, J. A Hunter, James Mellon, Peter Hathaway Capstick, Craig Boddington and many others. What makes it romantic? Three things in essence: Firstly, the .22 Long Rifle calibre itself. Secondly, the surge and quest for adventure; and thirdly, the magic of the African veld and the Bushveld Experience. That's it in a nutshell.

In 2004, Tony Stakes, was one of the delegates at the Second Gamebird Symposium, which was hosted at Onderstepoort, outside Pretoria, South Africa. There he elucidated upon the merits of hunting gamebirds, not with the shotgun, but with the .22 L.R rifle. After eleven years at St. Stithians College, Randburg, (circa 1957 - 1968) and after his military training, he went on to study Graphic Design at Stellenbosch University but changed over to Fine Art at the Johannesburg College of Art, Bok Street, where he completed his course in 1974. He remains dedicated to the idea that .22 L.R. hunting, will be the last form of small game shooting to receive International recognition as a fully bona fide form of African small game hunting, that has always lived in the shadow of the classical African Big Game hunt, by virtue of its past history and the necessary application of bush - craft in the field involving this particular form of hunting. Now retired, Tony Stakes lives with his life partner, Janeen 'Sweet - pea' Besseling in Nelspruit (Mbombela), South Africa, as a skilled and gifted artist and illustrator. His ink drawings and style are particularly well - suited to printing and reproduction and they have the unique ability to bring any substantial record or book on the hunt and the African Safari experience ' to life'. In addition to this, Tony and 'Sweet -pea' are also good camp cooks: Tony, furthermore, has substantial nursing experience, and worked in an I.C.U. environment for many years as a Registered Nurse. In his younger years, he was also a member of the then elite South African Police Special Taskforce, based in Pretoria where he mostly favored an FN Browning Auto -5 shotgun, loaded up with High - Velocity.30 calibre Eley Alphamax Special SG loads and Rottweil Breneke Slugs for use in counter - insurgency bush operations. Whenever he can, he goes camping in the Bushveld.
