OverviewFasting strengthens the spirit. It is the practice of starving the natural to awaken the spiritual. From reading the Scriptures, we understand that fasting is not an 'optional extra' to the Christian life because Jesus said, ""When you fast"" (Matthew 6:16), not ""If you fast,"" so fasting is expected as part of our Christian experience. The Bible teaches us why and how we should fast. Matthew 6:16-18 warns that we should ""not appear to fast as hypocrites."" Instead, while fasting, we are encouraged to wash our faces, dress in clean clothes, and go to work without drawing attention to ourselves. Jesus taught that if we seek human approval, that is all the approval we will get, but if we truly seek to honor our Father, then our fasting should be done secretly before an audience of One. During His sermon on the mount, Jesus added that, ""your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you"" (Matthew 6:18) The term secret does not mean your room in your house; instead, it means the inner corners of our hearts where every intention, whether good or evil, is weighed by the Lord. God's rewards are eternal, while man's praise is temporal. In the Bible, fasting often involves abstaining from food and drink to deepen one's intimacy or awareness of God. It's a spiritual discipline that can also mean giving up something pleasurable, or that distracts us from hearing His voice and obeying His commands. This is the case in Ezra 8:23, Daniel 10:3, and Matthew 4:2. In the 21st century, the equivalent might be temporarily logging off social media, watching less television, avoiding candy, or refraining from activities that compete for our attention and time. Biblical fasting requires us to starve our flesh to feed our spirit. Research shows that once you do something for 21 days, it becomes a habit. Similarly, stopping an activity for 21 days helps you break a habit. ""A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls."" Proverbs 25:28 ESV At Burning Bush Global, we begin every year with 21 days of fasting, dedicating the first part of the year to the Lord. This book encouraging you to fast to reach the next level.
