OverviewThis is the program for the fourth conference SUMI-FUSION in Nara, Japan and online December 1-3, 2021. Mokuhanga is the Japanese word for the waterbased woodblock printing technique developed in China and refined for making ukiyo-e prints in Japan during the Edo period. This technique has gained recognition as a flexible and non-toxic method of printmaking for contemporary creative artists. While many international artists now use this technique, it is still difficult to find tools, materials, markets, textbooks and research opportunities related to mokuhanga. The triennial International Mokuhanga Conference was established to address these needs by bringing together printmakers, academicians, researchers and materials/tool makers in an international forum. Still renowned today as a center of production for the finest sumi ink, Nara is an ideal site for IMC2021. This fourth convening of the International Mokuhanga Conference, titled Sumi-Fusion, celebrates the versatility of sumi in woodblock printing, both historically and in contemporary applications across Japan and abroad. Additionally, explores the presence of black and how it relates to color in Japanese technique woodblock printmaking.
