Candidates--through a process of state primary elections, caucuses, and conventions--vie for nomination by one of the major political parties, the winners being chosen during the summer at national party conventions. Through a weighted system, the winner in each state is apportioned a certain number of electors in the Electoral College, which meets in December to carry out the selection of the next president and vice president.
