Reviews

What an excellent guide! Well done David. I'll definitely give it to all of our journalists. - Alan Kohler, editor in chief, Business Spectator and Eureka Report. One of the most powerful tools we have in communication is the use of the right word in the right context in the right application. The tragedy of management is we pay so little attention to getting this right. The right word backed by enthusiasm, commitment and the authentic passion of a leader shakes the heart and rattles the brain. - Mark Cutifani, CEO, Anglogold-Ashanti. Every writer/communicator should have a copy of David's bible. Keep this next to the laptop and you're on the way to producing clean and clear copy. - Chris Pash, writer of Cliche of the Week. For those moments when a hastily written note might accidentally turn a new friend from a Boer to a bore (or even a boar or, worse, a boor), David Coe has created a neat aide memoire. - Michael Gill, former publisher of the Australian Financial Review. Thanks for your wordsmith (I love the broad possibilities of that word) guide, which is a handy and useful checklist. I was particularly glad to see 'accept' and 'except' in there as they are my two black beasts. - Robyn FitzRoy, chair, WealthPortal.

Author Information

David Coe developed in the cauldron of daily journalism a love for the precision and beauty of the English language as well as the discipline of a professional writer. He trained as a finance journalist and the newspapers he worked for include the Financial Review, The Australian, and both The Times and The Sun in London. David's career combines the discipline of financial journalism and investment banking with insights gained from 35 years of informal study into human behaviour in such diverse places as a Buddhist monastery; Sydney, Queensland and Cambridge universities; Findhorn in Scotland; the schools of Werner Erhard and John Demartini; and more than a dozen major newsrooms around the world. He is also an accomplished presenter, author, editor, animation producer, and script writer who gets quickly to the intellectual and emotional core of a business case. David, who is Australia's authority on investor social media, is a communications strategist with the rare ability to write for the head and the heart. His proficiency with written communications is the basis for many remarkable professional successes. These include creating a document for Macquarie Bank that brought in $12 million in share sales in its first 2 weeks and redesigning the finance pages of The Australian. Now he is the managing editor of Investor Torque, which helps listed companies engage tens of thousands of investors on social media. Trevor Sykes is a celebrated political and financial journalist, editor and author. He is the Walkley-award winning creator of Pierpont in the Australian Financial Review. From the global financial crisis to the corporate raiders of the 1980s and 90s such as Alan Bond, Conrad Black and Christopher Skase (whom he once taught to type), Trevor has been a chronicler of the great and the wicked in corporate Australia. He has won eight national awards for financial reporting and written a clutch of books explaining various financial scandals and failings.
